Several CUCC members will participate in the AFLAC Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon on Sunday, August 22. One of them is a member of Team in Training and is raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Contact Laurie B. or visit her page to make a donation.

Friends,
As events continue to unfold on the Gulf Coast, we are aware that even if the oil well is finally “killed,” the long term recovery of the people impacted is just beginning. The UCC Florida Conference decided to ask their churches to participate in a conference wide worship service either on the beach or in their own buildings on August 22 to recognize and to pray for people impacted.
In Kent Siladi’s words: “In the Florida Conference the fourth Sunday in August has been set aside as “Disaster Relief Recognition Sunday”. This annual observance is in recognition of the disasters that take place here in the Florida Conference – hurricanes, tornados, floods, fires and in the case of the oil spill – technological disasters. Pastors of the Gulf Coast region have been meeting to discuss how their congregations might respond to the Oil Spill and they decided that a Conference wide gathering on the beaches across Florida would be one such response.”
This note is to invite all UCC churches across North America to consider having a worship service or other type of event on August 22 (or on a date that would be appropriate to their church life) as a witness to the caring nature of the church for people whose lives have been put on hold indefinitely. Provided here is a link to a UCNews article and a liturgy that you may choose to use. We continue to pray…

Dear Friends,
I have accepted a call to serve a church in Springfield, VA. I will become the pastor of The Village Church, a progressive interdenominational congregation at Greenspring Retirement Community, Springfield. The church has about 150 members and a large number of visitors each week of residents who live in the community but have not joined the church. My predecessor was a Presbyterian pastor who served the church for eight years.
Sunday, July 25, will be my last Sunday at Christ Church.
I invite you to attend the worship service at 10:30 a.m. and to stay for a reception following the service. I realize that most of you will be attending your own church, but I did want to invite you. If you are free and can come it will be nice to have you share this last Sunday.
The past three years at Christ Church have been exciting as we have grown and done a number of outreach things in the community. They have an active search committee and hope to find a pastor who is committed to church growth and to being active in the community.
God's peace to you!
Jim Bell
